As the UK’s number one creative, digital and marketing recruitment agency, Major Players is at the top of its game and with rapid and continued growth very much the aim, it needed an IT infrastructure to match.

“We were starting to hit issues with speed and unreliability and this was compounded by the prospect of out of date software support contracts, and a physical server and cabling set up that had become a mess and made making critical updates cumbersome and time consuming,” recalled Jonathan Levene, Director of Operations at Major Players, who headed up the project for the virtualisation of Major Players IT infrastructure.

“I’d been involved in a similar project in a previous role so I had a reasonable insight into the scale of the task, what we needed and what we didn’t need,” added Jonathan.

“We contacted half a dozen potential suppliers and asked for their recommendations and proposals.

What struck me about Technique was that it seemed to know exactly what we needed straight away. They didn’t waste anyone’s time trying to sell us solutions we didn’t need or giving us a cheap, easy solution that would ultimately not have delivered or stood the test of time. I knew roughly what we needed and Technique very quickly showed it was on the same page. ”

One key requirement for Major Players was to ensure its staff could log in securely and reliably, to be able to work effectively from anywhere in the world, at any time and with full access to their bespoke software and data. It also wanted to be able to apply software updates seamlessly and easily without network disruption and to consolidate the amount of hardware in terms of physical servers on site. This virtualisation project would result in 14 virtual servers enabled by four physical machines on site.

After a great deal of pre-planning, working closely with Technique’s support technicians, the time came for installation of the new kit and cabling and to switch on the new network. For operational reasons the plan was to do the switch over on a Wednesday night and this meant an overnight commitment for both Jonathan and the Technique team.

As well as installing new physical servers and the software which would enable the virtual servers, there was also a great deal of work to be done in creating a new domain and active directory, installing bespoke software and migrating data and mailboxes.

“On a project of this size there are always going to be some unforeseen issues. We’d expected this and planned accordingly. We did encounter some problems, but for me it’s about how those concerns are dealt with. Matt from Technique is one of the best IT technicians I’ve ever dealt with, and he worked tirelessly and intelligently to help resolve performance issues. Technique was very responsive and provided additional resource as we needed it to make the transition as painless as possible.”

Teething issues resolved, Major Players now have their state of the art IT network up and running, whilst Technique provide the ongoing support from their data centre in Berkshire.

We’ve now got a stable, reliable, responsive network that’s always available. It’s critical to our current business, as well as our future plans.
